The United States national debt has surpassed $40 trillion for the first time in history.

The national debt reached a record-breaking $40 trillion milestone this week, growing by $1 trillion in less than half a year. This milestone was reached earlier than the Congressional Budget Office had predicted, which had estimated the debt would not hit this figure until 2028. Significant growth occurred during the administrations of President Trump and former President Joe Biden. Under the first administration of President Trump, the debt rose by $7.8 trillion. During the Biden administration, the debt increased by $8.4 trillion. To date, the second administration of President Trump has added approximately $3.8 trillion. Experts attribute much of the recent growth to the federal government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic and fiscal policies that allow spending to exceed revenues. The current debt relative to the economy stands at about 125% of GDP. Projections suggest the debt could reach $64 trillion in a decade if current spending trends continue without significant fiscal restraint.
