Hong Kong's first post-handover leader Tung Chee-hwa has died at the age of 89.

Tung Chee-hwa died on Tuesday night at the age of 89, surrounded by his family. As the first leader of Hong Kong after the city returned to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, Tung Chee-hwa was the first steward of the "one country, two systems" policy. During his tenure, Tung Chee-hwa navigated the city through the Asian Financial Crisis and several public health challenges, including bird flu and Sars. He also oversaw the historic 2003 protests where half a million people took to the streets to protest a proposed national security law. After resigning in 2005, Tung Chee-hwa continued to serve as an elder statesman, working to improve US-China relations and supporting successive governments. Beijing's liaison office described Tung Chee-hwa as a renowned patriot and a close friend of the Communist Party of China.
