Twelve Polish pilgrims died after a bus carrying them overturned on a Hungarian motorway.

Twelve people were killed and at least 10 others were seriously injured when a bus carrying Polish pilgrims overturned on a Hungarian motorway. The accident occurred on the M3 motorway near the town of Mezőkeresztes at approximately 1:00 a.m. local time. Police believe the driver fell asleep, causing the vehicle to veer off the straight road into a ditch. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that a special aircraft will be sent to Budapest to provide medical and consular assistance to the victims. The bus was carrying 57 passengers and two drivers returning from a pilgrimage to the Catholic shrine in Međugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar offered his sincere condolences to the families of the victims and thanked the emergency services. Polish President Karol Nawrocki also expressed his deep sorrow regarding the tragedy. The Polish infrastructure minister, Dariusz Klimczak, stated that the general inspectorate of road transport will conduct enhanced checks on all buses and drivers' working hours.
