Two people were killed in a small plane crash in Ludlow, Massachusetts, on Saturday night. The aircraft, a Piper 28A, crashed in a wooded and swampy area off Center Street around 9:15 p.m. Local and state police were alerted to a missing aircraft and conducted a search of the area. A Civil Air Patrol pilot used a portable beacon receiver to help locate the plane, and emergency crews used drones and a state police plane to find the exact location. Because the crash site was in approximately four feet of water, rescuers laid down planking to access the scene and remove the two victims. The plane was part of the fleet of Alpha One Flight, a Plymouth-based flight school and rental service. The aircraft took off from the Northampton Airport at 8:54 p.m. and was heading toward Plymouth. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the circumstances of the crash in coordination with the Ludlow Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit.
