Debbie Wasserman Schultz wins Democratic primary for Florida's newly redrawn 20th Congressional District
Debbie Wasserman Schultz won the Democratic primary for Florida's 20th Congressional District, defeating four opponents in a closely watched race. The victory secures her spot in the general election against Republican Brent Andersen and independent Kedner Maxime. Schultz entered the race after Republican-led redistricting created a new district that has been represented by Black lawmakers for 34 years. She emphasized her seniority and record of service as key advantages. The district includes predominantly Black communities in central and western Broward County. While Schultz won, several other candidates lost their primary bids. Republican Rep. Cory Mills, who was endorsed by Trump, lost to Ryan Elijah. Similarly, Catalina Lauf, who was also endorsed by Trump, lost her primary bid in the 19th District. These losses highlight the competitive nature of the Florida primary, even in districts where the winners are considered heavy favorites to join Congress next year.
