Jibril Yahya Ali dies in U.S. airstrike while serving as liaison between al-Shabaab and Houthi rebels
Jibril Yahya Ali, a Somali liaison, was killed in a U.S. airstrike while traveling with his wife, Budoor Murshid, in Yemen. He served as a key figure in strengthening ties between the Houthi rebels and al-Shabaab militants, facilitating the transfer of weapons and military equipment between the two groups. While the Houthis provided Jibril Yahya Ali with a furnished apartment in Yemen and a passport, he moved clandestinely between Somalia and Yemen to broker arms shipments. Al-Shabaab, a wealthy affiliate of al Qaeda, sought advanced weaponry from the Houthis, including antiaircraft missiles and drones. In exchange, the Houthis gained a foothold in Somalia, allowing them to understand the global oil trade and threaten the maritime pinch-points of the Gulf of Aden. The alliance between the two groups, which are typically sectarian adversaries, was formed due to their shared hatred of the West and Israel. Jibril Yahya Ali was killed two weeks before the U.S. began its war with Iran. The administration announced that the U.S. military has conducted some 40 airstrikes against al-Shabaab targets in Somalia this year.
