Uber and Wayve Launch London's First Commercial Robotaxi Service

Initially, the robotaxis will feature human safety drivers who monitor the driving and can intervene if necessary. These drivers are licensed by Transport for London. The administration of the service will gradually phase out these safety drivers as the technology matures. The autonomous vehicles do not use lidar sensors, relying instead on cameras and radar. Wayve's system is designed to operate without traditional geofencing or high-definition maps, using a learned AI driver to adapt to new environments. London customers can be matched with a Wayve-developed vehicle when booking a ride through the Uber app. Passengers will not be prompted to tip at the end of a robotaxi trip. The service will start with a small rollout of under 20 vehicles and expand from there.
