Mahmoud Esmat reports Egypt plans to add two reactors to the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant.

Egypt is planning to expand the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant on the Mediterranean coast by adding two additional reactors to its current four-unit design. Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat stated that the plan was adopted following instructions from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and will be involved in upcoming discussions with Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy corporation, Rosatom. While the existing plant is targeted for completion by the2029/2030 fiscal year, the expansion aims to reduce reliance on traditional fuels and save approximately 8 million cubic metres of gas. The project is being constructed by Rosatom under a 2015 agreement, with Russia financing 85% of the USD 30 billion cost. However, the Egyptian Nuclear Power Plant Authority reported several construction violations, including foundation defects and engineering problems. These issues have prompted inspections of other Rosatom projects, such as Hungary's Paks-2 plant, to ensure cost feasibility and technical accuracy.
