Volodymyr Zelensky Presents Joint Ukraine-US-Europe Peace Proposal to End the War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky presented a joint Ukraine-US-Europe peace proposal on August 23 to conclude the ongoing conflict. The proposal, developed during talks with US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff and former Senior Advisor to the US President Jared Kushner, outlines three primary priorities: a ceasefire, a reciprocal withdrawal of forces from the current front line, and security guarantees from the European Union and NATO. While the administration announced the proposal's key ideas, Zelensky noted that the US and European parties have already agreed to the core concepts. However, the Kremlin continues to reject all current proposals, insisting on Ukrainian surrender to all its demands. The proposal demonstrates Ukraine's determination to end the war even at the expense of significant concessions. Meanwhile, Russian forces continue to advance east of Slovyansk, prioritizing the seizure of tactical heights to facilitate future assaults. Despite these efforts, Russian President Vladimir Putin has set several deadlines to seize the entirety of Donetsk Oblast, which the Institute for the Study of War assesses as unlikely to be met by the end of 2026.
