Rafael Mariano Grossi reports significant progress in Syria's cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has begun excavating a site in Deir ez-Zur linked to a clandestine nuclear program operated by the former regime of Bashar al-Assad. Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Director General of the IAEA, announced that the agency is working closely with the new Syrian government to account for several tons of nuclear material that could potentially be used for various purposes. Syria's new leadership, under President Ahmad al-Sharaa, has pledged full cooperation with the UN watchdog. Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani confirmed that the material found at the undeclared site does not pose an immediate danger and will remain in Syrian custody under international safeguards. This proactive engagement marks a significant advance in resolving outstanding issues from the former regime's nuclear activities. Both Syria and the IAEA have agreed to expand cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology to support national development.
