Professional soldier Jhoan Camilo Sanabria Mendoza was killed during a military operation in the rural area of BriceƱo, northern Antioquia. The incident occurred on Sunday, August 23, as troops from the Rapid Deployment Battalion No. 19 were performing explosives removal tasks on El Roblal street. A landmine, allegedly installed by the Gulf Clan, detonated via a radio frequency mechanism, resulting in the death of Jhoan Camilo Sanabria Mendoza and causing injuries to three other military personnel. Two of the wounded soldiers were reported to be in grave health and required intensive care in Medellƭn. The National Army expressed its rejection of the indiscriminate use of explosive devices, noting that such actions threaten both military forces and the civilian population. The incident highlights a growing trend of improvised explosive devices used by illegal armed groups in the region, which has recently caused the displacement of approximately 100 families from the Ituango municipality. Authorities continue to investigate the exact circumstances of the landmine installation and are reinforcing security operations to protect regional inhabitants.
