The Food and Drug Administration approved updated COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and BioNTech, Moderna, and Sanofi on Thursday. These vaccines are designed to target the XFG variant of the virus. Pfizer and BioNTech's COMIRNATY XFG vaccine is approved for adults aged 65 and older, as well as individuals aged 5 through 64 with at least one underlying condition that increases the risk of severe illness. Moderna received approval for two mRNA vaccines: Spikevax and mNEXSPIKE. Spikevax is approved for those aged 6 months through 64 with an underlying condition and those aged 65 and older. mNEXSPIKE is approved for those aged 12 through 64 with an underlying condition and those aged 65 and older. Sanofi and Novavax received approval for Nuvaxovid, which is approved for adults aged 65 and older and those aged 12 through 64 with an underlying condition. Underlying conditions that increase the risk of severe illness include asthma, heart, kidney, liver, or lung disease, diabetes, obesity, and pregnancy. The vaccines are expected to be available in pharmacies and clinics across the United States this fall. Health insurance plans are expected to cover the updated vaccines for the 2026-27 season.
