Jeff Waksman, principal deputy assistant secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment, stated that the Janus Program aims to accelerate the transition of nuclear technologies from experimental prototypes to operational hardware. These reactors are designed to be small, modular, and capable of operating in remote environments without relying on external power grids. While the military seeks to enhance energy resilience and project combat power globally, some critics argue the plan is expensive and risky. Alan J. Kuperman, an associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin, described the initiative as a potential subsidy for nuclear companies. However, the Army is working to align its regulatory processes with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to ensure future commercial viability. The program includes partnerships with companies like General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems, which will develop the Tactical Energy System for deployment at bases such as Fort Hood.
