U.S. Diesel Prices Reach Record High of $6.05 Per Gallon Amidst Ongoing Iran and Ukraine Wars

The national average price of diesel fuel reached a record high of $6.05 per gallon on Friday. This price surge represents a more than 60% increase from the previous year, driven primarily by supply disruptions caused by the wars in Iran and Ukraine. Conflict in the Middle East has constrained oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz, while Ukrainian drone strikes have damaged Russian refineries, leading to a diesel export ban by the Kremlin. These disruptions have reduced global refining capacity by approximately 5 million barrels per day. The administration announced that high energy costs are a significant economic challenge. Experts note that higher diesel prices will likely impact the cost of consumer goods, food, and transportation. While retailers have largely absorbed costs so far, analysts suggest that businesses will eventually pass these expenses to consumers as contracts are renegotiated. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, stated that the Iran war has added approximately $115 billion in additional costs for U.S. households this year. He noted that lower- and middle-income families are facing the most significant financial pressure from these elevated energy prices.
