The administration sanctions 36 Iranian aviation targets to pressure the regime under Operation Economic Outcast
The administration announced sweeping sanctions on Tuesday targeting 36 entities linked to Iran's aviation sector. These measures include 27 Iranian airlines and nine service providers or sales agents located in Turkey, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, and the United Arab Emirates. The actions are part of Operation Economic Outcast, a campaign designed to cut off the Iranian regime's financial lifelines and stop its ability to fund the ongoing war. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the administration is taking action against companies that continue to support Mahan Air, a private airline used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to transport weapons and personnel. The Treasury Department also terminated all aviation-related licenses, including payments for overflights of Iranian airspace and authorizations for non-U.S. airlines flying U.S. export-controlled airplanes into Iran. The sanctions aim to effectively remove the entire Iranian aviation sector from the market. While some experts question the long-term impact of the campaign, the administration maintains that the move serves as a warning to any nation doing business with Iran that they risk being cut off from the global financial system.
