Mohsen Rezaei Announces Iran's New Exclusion Zone to Counter US Naval Blockade in the Strait of Hormuz

Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of Iran’s supreme national security council, announced that Tehran will establish a new 'exclusion zone' outside of the Strait of Hormuz in the coming days. This move follows a weekend of renewed exchanges between the US and Iran, where the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles at two American naval vessels. In response, the administration announced that US forces struck three Iranian oil tankers, including the M/T Downy and M/T Stark 1, to impose a higher economic cost on Iran. The waterway, which carries roughly a fifth of the world's oil supply, has seen traffic drop to its lowest level since May. To counter Iran's leverage, the administration is utilizing a naval blockade and tougher sanctions. While Iran seeks to manage the fuel demand and economic pressure, the administration's actions have forced many Iranian tankers to remain at anchor. Rezaei stated that any ship entering the restricted zone would be added to a sanctions list. He noted that the waterway would only fully open again once the Americans stop the sabotage, threats, and attacks on Iran.
