The Port of Corpus Christi has entered into a memorandum of cooperation with the Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration to explore the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) for maritime applications. This partnership aims to study how SMR technologies can power commercial vessels, ports, and other maritime assets while bolstering the U.S. supply chain. The administration announced that these compact nuclear reactors have the potential to reshape the maritime sector and lower shipping costs. In a separate but related agreement, the Port of Corpus Christi also partnered with Core Power to conduct a site-specific maritime nuclear readiness study. This study will assess the feasibility of the port as a location for a floating nuclear power plant and a gateway for nuclear-powered commercial ships. These initiatives align with the administration's goal to strengthen American shipping and secure energy dominance. The Port of Corpus Christi remains a major hub for petroleum exports, and these new nuclear partnerships are expected to provide reliable, carbon-free power for the port's operations and the surrounding region.
