U.S. Military Strikes Five Iranian Crude Oil Tankers in Response to Ballistic Missile Attacks

The U.S. military struck five Iranian crude oil tankers in response to attempts by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to target a U.S. Navy warship. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that the strikes occurred in the Gulf of Oman and near Iran's Kharg Island. Before the strikes, U.S. forces instructed the crews of the vessels to abandon ship. One of the targeted vessels, the M/T Riesco, was seen sinking in the Gulf of Oman. The other four vessels—the Kaviz, Charminar, and Riesco, and the Derya—were struck. Three of these tankers, the Kaviz, Charminar, and Riesco, have direct links to Russia's shadow fleet and have been involved in transporting Russian oil. Iran retaliated by launching a missile barrage toward Jordan, targeting the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base. The Jordanian army reported that its air defenses destroyed 18 of the 20 ballistic missiles launched. No deaths were reported during the exchange. As part of a pressure campaign against Tehran, the administration also took actions against Iran's airline industry, affecting 27 Iranian airlines and nine service providers.
