Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg spoke virtually at a G20 Innovation Ministerial in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to discuss the infrastructure requirements for artificial intelligence. Musk highlighted a "crisis of power" regarding the electricity needed for data centers, noting that a significant power shortfall is expected next year. He also stated that artificial intelligence could increase the global economy by $20 trillion to $30 trillion annually. Zuckerberg noted that the buildout of these data centers requires hundreds of thousands, and potentially millions, of jobs in the skilled trades. He observed that Meta is currently struggling to find the necessary skilled tradespeople to complete their own data center projects. The meeting, organized by the administration, aimed to keep the AI revolution largely free of government rules and scrutiny. During the summit, Musk also criticized European governments for overregulation, stating that technology should be default legal rather than default illegal. The administration announced that the G20 Innovation Ministerial is part of a series of meetings leading up to a leaders' summit in December.
