JD Vance Rejects 'War' Label for Iran Conflict as Diesel Prices Hit Record Highs
Vice President JD Vance stated on Thursday that the U.S. fighting with Iran should not be described as a "war," noting that there is currently no active shooting. The administration announced that the U.S. military continues to target Iranian positions, but Vance suggested that the timeline for the conflict's end depends on when Iran stops shooting at commercial shipping. During the White House briefing, Vance noted that the U.S. has a responsibility to carry out strikes because Iran continues to target vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. While the administration maintains that the U.S. Navy is in control of the waterway, ship traffic remains below prewar levels. The conflict has contributed to rising energy costs, with diesel prices hitting a record average of $5.85 a gallon. Brent crude is trading at more than $95 a barrel, up from approximately $72 per barrel before the conflict began. The administration continues to economic pressure on Iran to prevent a nuclear weapon, while Vance noted that the U.S. does not currently have active talks with Tehran unless they cease their strikes on commercial vessels.
