Gustavo Petro visits Mexico for academic agenda following inclusion on US OFAC list
Former Colombian President Gustavo Petro traveled to Mexico for an academic and editorial agenda starting August 31, 2026. The trip was authorized by the Colombian Senate after Petro received permission to leave the country for one year following his presidency. During his stay, Petro addressed the climate crisis at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, where he presented the final chapter of his upcoming book. He also met with Mexican cultural and editorial representatives to arrange the international publication of his book, "Economía política de la crisis climática." During his trip, Petro experienced a notable incident on an Aeromexico flight where a Colombian citizen recognized him in first class and shouted, "We are firm for the country, we are firm!" This occurred after Avianca refused to transport him due to his inclusion on the US OFAC list. Petro stated that his inclusion on the list was a result of political persecution for his criticisms of the situation in Palestine, where several people were allegedly killed by Israeli forces. He characterized the list as an instrument for progressivism and described his conversation with President Trump as "magical."
