Severe Thunderstorms Impact the Washington D.C. Area, Causing Power Outages and Toppled Trees

Severe thunderstorms swept through the Washington D.C. area just before midnight on Thursday, producing powerful wind gusts exceeding 60 mph. The storms caused significant damage, toppling trees and cutting power to more than 150,000 customers. The weather system produced frequent lightning and heavy rain, with some areas experiencing hail. Conditions were favorable for strong to severe thunderstorms to develop across the District, Arlington, and Alexandria, as well as surrounding counties in Maryland and Virginia. A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect for these regions until 9 p.m. The storms moved quickly, requiring residents to stay indoors and away from windows during the most intense periods.
