Musammat Shamima Begum and Areebah Jahin killed in head-on collision on Interstate 270

Musammat Shamima Begum and Areebah Jahin were killed in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 270 in Bethesda, Maryland, on Saturday evening. The 46-year-old Begum and 23-year-old Jahin were passengers in a Toyota sedan that was struck head-on by a Ford Mustang traveling in the wrong direction. Maryland State Police responded to the scene at approximately 6:46 p.m. The driver of the Ford Mustang, Jose Caballero Nolasco, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes. Investigators believe alcohol impairment may have been a contributing factor in the collision. Nolasco was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries and was subsequently released to the Montgomery County Detention Center. He faces multiple charges, including gross negligent manslaughter, homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, and life-threatening injury by motor vehicle. The driver of the Toyota and an 8-year-old passenger were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Lanes on I-270 were closed for five hours while police investigated the crash.
