House Passes Resolution Condemning Socialism and Endorsing President Trump's SAVE America Act

The House of Representatives passed a resolution on Tuesday to denounce socialism in all its forms, including the Democratic Socialists of America. The measure passed with a vote of 220 to 192, with eight Democrats joining the Republicans in favor. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise stated that the resolution also condemns the idea of noncitizens voting in elections, which is a core part of the Democratic Socialists of America platform. The resolution explicitly calls for the passage of the SAVE America Act, a legislative priority endorsed by President Trump that implements voter identification laws. Democratic leadership criticized the move, particularly the eight Democrats who joined the Republican majority. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries described the resolution as a MAGA effort to rig the midterm elections. While some centrist Democrats sought to strip out the SAVE America Act provision, the amendment was not approved for a floor vote. Progressive Democrats, such as Darializa Avila Chevalier, argued that the resolution ignores the cost-of-living crisis and that democratic socialism provides popular policies like Medicare and Social Security.
