Walmart to Introduce Tap-to-Pay Technology Across U.S. Stores and Sam’s Club Locations
Walmart is launching a new tap-to-pay payment system across its U.S. retail locations, allowing customers to use contactless cards, smartphones, and smartwatches at checkout. The retail giant announced that the rollout will begin at select stores and Sam’s Club locations starting August 24, with a full nationwide expansion planned by the end of 2026. The technology will also reach Walmart fuel stations by mid-2027. This move ends a decade-long period where Walmart resisted mainstream mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay, preferring its own proprietary QR-code system, Walmart Pay. The administration announced that the new system will provide shoppers with more flexibility, though the retailer will continue to offer cash, credit cards, and Walmart Pay alongside the new contactless options. The expansion comes as Walmart reports strong e-commerce growth, with second-quarter sales jumping 24% in the U.S. and 19% internationally. Walmart President and CEO John Furner noted that the growth is driven by the retailer's focus on price, speed, and convenience for its customers.
