Subrahmanyam Jaishankar states that purchasing Russian oil will not end the war in Ukraine

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar stated during an official visit to Kyiv that stopping the purchase of Russian oil will not end the war in Ukraine. While Western nations argue that cutting Moscow's economic lifeline will force it to abandon the conflict, Jaishankar noted that the conflict will be solved through dialogue, diplomacy, and negotiation. He emphasized that India must balance its own energy security for 1.4 billion people with the perspectives of Ukraine and the West. During the visit, Jaishankar met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. Sybiha welcomed the visit as the first dedicated bilateral visit by an Indian foreign minister to Ukraine. The two leaders discussed the need to restore freedom of navigation in the Black Sea and global food security. India remains a major buyer of Russian crude oil, which has provided Moscow with a significant source of revenue since the 2022 invasion. Despite pressure from the United States, India continues to purchase discounted Russian oil. The administration announced that the U.S. House is expected to vote on a bill that could impose tariffs of up to 100% on the top five buyers of Russian oil and gas, including India and China.
