Lindsay Clancy faces first-degree murder charges in trial over the deaths of her three children

A Massachusetts jury is currently deliberating on whether Lindsay Clancy is guilty of first-degree murder for the deaths of her three children, who were strangled with exercise bands in January 2023. The trial has centered on the question of criminal responsibility, with the defense arguing that Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a rare and serious mental health illness. Attorney Kevin Reddington argued that Clancy was not criminally responsible due to this mental defect, while prosecutor Jennifer Sprague noted that Clancy could still distinguish between right and wrong during the time of the killings. If convicted of first-degree murder, Clancy faces a mandatory life sentence without parole. The jury may also consider second-degree murder or manslaughter charges. If found not guilty by reason of insanity, Clancy will be committed to a psychiatric hospital rather than being set free. Because she is paralyzed from a suicide attempt, she poses little direct threat to public safety, but the court must determine if she remains mentally ill and dangerous.
