Waymo expands autonomous ride-hailing service to Denver, San Diego, and Tampa

Waymo began welcoming its first public riders in Denver, San Diego, and Tampa on Tuesday, expanding its fully autonomous ride-hailing service to 14 cities. The Alphabet-owned company reported that tens of thousands of people in each new market have already signed up for access. Waymo stated that its service areas are designed to connect riders with the places they need to go, including errands and late-night trips. The company has spent months preparing for these launches by validating its technology on local roads and working with first responders. Waymo reported safety data showing that its driverless technology was involved in 94% fewer crashes involving serious injuries or worse than human drivers over the same distance. In Denver, the launch was praised by Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, who noted the expansion provides clean mobility choices for the state. The Denver Police Department issued a training bulletin for officers to handle the vehicles when no one is behind the wheel. Meanwhile, Amazon's Zoox announced it will begin testing its vehicles in Houston and San Diego. Tesla has also been seen roaming the streets of San Diego, with the company hinting at an official deployment in Austin, Texas.
