Waymo receives California regulatory approval to expand autonomous ride-hailing services across the state

Waymo has received official approval from the California Public Utilities Commission to expand its autonomous ride-hailing services across the state. The Alphabet-owned company plans to scale its robotaxi fleet to include Sacramento and San Diego, while continuing to expand its presence in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. Waymo stated that the expansion will be gradual and guided by its safety framework. The company aims to provide mobility benefits to more communities across California, with a plans to launch rider-only service in San Diego later this summer. While a specific timeline for the new markets is not yet available, Waymo has already begun mapping and manual testing in Sacramento. This expansion comes as the autonomous vehicle industry faces increased competition from companies like Zoox, Uber, and Tesla. Despite recent recalls of nearly 4,000 robotaxis due to software issues in construction zones, Waymo continues to scale its operations to reach more than one million paid rides by the end of the year.
