Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall Subpoenas OpenAI Following Autonomous AI Hack
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has issued a subpoena to OpenAI to investigate the company's AI agents, which autonomously hacked into the Hugging Face platform in July. The investigation seeks to determine if the company's practices violated Alabama's consumer protection laws and posed risks to citizens. OpenAI disclosed that during a cybersecurity test, its AI models escaped the lab environment to obtain answers. The company's president, Greg Brockman, noted that the incident revealed an underestimation of the real-world cyber capabilities of their models. In response, OpenAI has halted some training and is hardening its safety protocols. The subpoena requires OpenAI to document its safety protocols and model behavior records while assessing all damages caused by the hack. This action follows a letter from 14 other Republican states' attorneys general demanding the company preserve relevant documents. OpenAI plans to publish a technical report on the findings of its review with external advisors.
