Ukraine's General Staff reports Russian military losses have reached 1.5 million personnel

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russian military losses in the conflict have reached 1,500,870 personnel. This figure represents the highest number of casualties for the Russian army in a single war since World War II. The General Staff estimated that these losses are approximately 100 times higher than the Soviet Union's losses during the decade-long war in Afghanistan and 125 times greater than the officially acknowledged losses from the First and Second Chechen wars. British military intelligence estimates that approximately 500,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the start of the full-scale invasion. Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton, chief of the UK armed forces, noted that the vast majority of these losses occurred since January 2023, during which Russian forces gained only about 2% of Ukrainian territory. To replenish forces, the Russian government is preparing to expand its military manpower. A new mobilization effort could bring as many as 600,000 additional personnel into the Russian military by the end of 2027. Ukraine's military intelligence chief Oleh Ivashchenko stated that Russian military planners are considering mobilizing around 300,000 people in 2026, followed by another 300,000 in 2027.
