John Howard's government established a lasting playbook of migration politics following the 2001 Tampa crisis.

The Howard government faced a significant political challenge 25 years ago when the Norwegian freighter MV Tampa rescued 433 people, primarily refugees from Afghanistan. While the Coalition was lagging in the polls, the administration's refusal to let the refugees land in Australia led to the creation of the Pacific Solution. This shift initiated a quarter-century of offshore processing and deterrence-based migration policies. Kon Karapanagiotidis, the CEO and Founder of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, noted that the Tampa crisis demonstrated how politics can poison policy. He argued that instead of choosing humanity, leaders chose fear, turning people seeking safety into political problems. The crisis also served as a major turning point that transformed global immigration policies. A new documentary series, TAMPA: The Turning Point, will premiere on the ABC to provide a detailed account of the drama, featuring personal accounts from refugees, politicians, and the prime minister himself.
