Sarah Moberg and Second Harvest Heartland coordinate the donation of over 10,000 pounds of food from the Minnesota State Fair

Second Harvest Heartland has coordinated a donation of more than 10,000 pounds of leftover food from the Minnesota State Fair to support the state's hunger relief network. Sarah Moberg, the CEO of Second Harvest Heartland, stated that the food could benefit more than 1,000 families. The donation includes items from over 200 food vendors, including Sweet Martha’s Cookie Jar, Fresh French Fries, and the Perfect Pickle. This year marks the first time the fair has consolidated the donated food at a single pickup location. The food will be distributed by partner organizations such as FreedomWorks, Loaves and Fishes, and The Sanneh Foundation. For example, Mel McCormick, an executive director at Loaves and Fishes, noted that the organization rescued more than 4,000 pounds of food from the fair last year. The distribution network ensures that food that might otherwise go to waste is shared with communities across the state. FreedomWorks will distribute its portion of the food at its North Minneapolis facility next Wednesday, while Loaves and Fishes will distribute its portion at its larger North Minneapolis warehouse and various meal sites across the metro area.
