Germany Challenges Nicaragua's Claims of Facilitating Genocide at the International Court of Justice

Germany has requested that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) dismiss a case brought by Nicaragua, which accuses Berlin of violating the 1948 Genocide Convention by supplying weapons to Israel. Nicaragua argues that Germany is facilitating acts of genocide in Gaza despite being aware of the risks. Germany, the second-largest arms supplier to Israel after the United States, denies the allegations and argues that the court lacks jurisdiction over certain claims. Legal representatives for Germany stated that the country's arms exports undergo detailed scrutiny that exceeds international law requirements. Conversely, Nicaragua's ambassador to the Netherlands, Carlos Jose Arguello Gomez, argued that Germany has failed to differentiate between self-defense and genocide. The ICJ previously rejected Nicaragua's request for emergency measures to halt military aid but refused to dismiss the case entirely. If the court rules in favor of Germany's preliminary objections, the case will be thrown out; otherwise, it will proceed to a full examination of the merits, which could take several years.
