South China Morning Post columnist begins one-year research appointment at Harvard Kennedy School

A South China Morning Post columnist has started a one-year appointment as a senior visiting scholar at the Rajawali Foundation Institute for Asia at the Harvard Kennedy School. The scholar intends to map the boundaries of superpower friction and shared interests between the United States and China while consulting with American thought leaders across the political spectrum. During his research, the columnist will examine whether conflict between the two nations is inevitable and explore areas of cooperation such as climate change, future pandemics, transnational crime, and artificial intelligence. He noted that the current deterioration in bilateral relations intensified in 2018 during the first administration of Donald Trump. Before beginning his tenure, the columnist spent three days scrubbing his phone of old emails and WeChat threads to avoid potential misinterpretations by Chinese officials. He observed that while the United States remains a significant source of uncertainty for China's modernization, the current trade truce provides a strategic opportunity for dialogue.
