Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is facing increasing scrutiny from both sides of the aisle regarding his leadership of the Pentagon. Several lawmakers, including Republicans Sen. Thom Tillis and Rep. Don Bacon, have criticized Hegseth for what they describe as inept management and a lack of experience. Sen. Tillis specifically noted that Hegseth appears intimidated by competence and focuses on culture wars rather than the core work of national defense. Rep. Bacon also expressed that Hegseth has not been a very good leader in many ways. The administration announced that Secretary Hegseth is doing an incredible job and has successfully reversed the previous administration's focus on DEI and woke ideology to prioritize readiness and lethality. While the administration maintains complete trust in Hegseth, the Pentagon has experienced significant personnel churn, with at least 20 high-ranking military officials leaving or being fired within the first week of the current term. Public opinion polls also indicate that Hegseth is currently one of the most unpopular cabinet members. Despite these challenges, President Trump stated that Hegseth is doing a fantastic job and defended the nation's ammunition supplies, noting that munitions are being produced at levels never seen before.
