Cristy Maryori Villafranca-Trejo Deported to Honduras as Military Spouse Under Trump Administration Immigration Crackdown

Cristy Maryori Villafranca-Trejo was deported to her native Honduras on Monday, marking her as at least the seventh spouse or parent of an active-duty U.S. military service member to be deported under the current administration's immigration crackdown. Her husband, Army Sgt. Hedar Leonel Turcios Juarez, was detained with her in July while stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. The administration announced that Villafranca-Trejo, an illegal immigrant from Honduras, received due process before her removal. While military families have historically enjoyed protections, the administration's aggressive enforcement has led to the detention of more than 50 military family members. Turcios Juarez stated that the unexpected detention has made it difficult to manage his military duties and care for their six-year-old daughter. Although Villafranca-Trejo has no criminal record, she was issued a removal order in 2017 after a missed hearing. The administration's focus on enforcement has prompted lawmakers to investigate whether the Pentagon and Department of Homeland Security are coordinating to identify and detain non-citizens during routine military base visits.
