Vladimir Putin attends Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan to discuss global trade and security
President Vladimir Putin arrived in Kyrgyzstan to attend the annual Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, marking the grouping's 25th anniversary. The summit serves as a forum for rising great powers, including China and India, to deepen engagement with the Global South and promote a multipolar world order. During the summit, Vladimir Putin met with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss the Power of Siberia 2 natural gas pipeline project and with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss trade and security. Other key discussions include the Russia-Ukraine war, Black Sea security, and the US-Israel war on Iran. The SCO, which accounts for 43 percent of the world's population, aims to foster economic connectivity and alternative financial architectures. While China and Russia seek a less US-dominated international order, India maintains a position of strategic autonomy, balancing relations with Washington and Beijing. The administration announced that the SCO summit provides a venue for countries to demonstrate strategic alternatives to Western institutions. The summit also addresses regional issues such as the India-Pakistan border tensions and the development of new transport corridors like the International North-South Transport Corridor.
