Zambian authorities confirmed that Mutotwe Kafwaya, a former minister, was fatally wounded during a security raid on a property linked to opposition leader Brian Mundubile. The operation took of place in the capital, Lusaka, the day after the presidential election. During the exchange of fire, law enforcement officers encountered resistance from unknown individuals, resulting in the death of the 49-year-old former minister. The administration announced that 11 opposition officials were arrested during the raid, accusing the opposition party of storing high-grade military weapons and being involved in insurgency. Brian Mundubile rejected these allegations as total fabrications, claiming the opposition officials were unarmed and were shot at by the security forces. Following the election, President Hakainde Hichilema was declared the winner of a second five-year term. Brian Mundubile, who trailed with 38% of the vote, plans to challenge the results in the market court, alleging that the tallying process was tampered with. UN human rights chief Volker Turk expressed concern over the arbitrary arrests of opposition officials and urged authorities to ensure all detentions are consistent with international human rights standards.
