Mikie Sherrill identifies 6,600 noncitizens who were accidentally registered to vote in New Jersey due to a software error.

Governor Mikie Sherrill announced that a serious software error in New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle System caused approximately 6,600 noncitizens to be registered to vote between June 2023 and June 2024. While these individuals indicated they were not U.S. citizens when applying for licenses, the system registered them regardless. Of these noncitizens, fewer than 400 cast improper ballots. The error occurred during the previous administration's tenure. Sherrill noted that the noncitizens were scattered across the state and registered as Democrats, Republicans, and unaffiliated voters. The administration announced that the state is currently removing these individuals from the voter rolls and replacing the vendor responsible for the glitch. The discovery supports claims made by the administration regarding the need for stricter voting requirements. White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson stated the incident underscores the necessity of the SAVE America Act. While Sherrill defended her administration's transparency in addressing the mistake, Republican lawmakers argued that the error highlights the importance of voter ID to ensure election integrity.
