Firefighters Hold France's Largest Peacetime Evacuation Area as Wildfires Sweep Across Europe
Firefighters in southwestern France successfully contained a vast wildfire, allowing approximately 198,000 people to return home after the country's largest peacetime evacuation. While the Gironde fire remains contained but not yet fixed, authorities kept the Cap Ferret peninsula evacuated due to persistent hot spots. In the Var region, a second fire held its defensive lines overnight, though 2,500 people remain unable to return home. Simultaneously, Greece faced a severe wildfire crisis as gale-force winds drove flames through the Porto Germeno resort, forcing hundreds of tourists to be evacuated by sea. Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Evangelos Tournas noted that extreme turbulence hindered aircraft operations. Meanwhile, wildfires continue to plague Spain and Portugal, with Spain recording significantly higher than average burned land for the year. Experts attribute the rapid spread and intensity of the fires to Europe's status as the fastest-warming continent, where prolonged droughts and rising temperatures have created highly combustible vegetation.
