A Marine Corps F-35B fighter jet crashed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego on Friday morning, resulting in a Class A mishap. The aircraft, which is part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Group 11, went down short of the runway near the base's main hangars around 10 a.m. local time. Capt. Steven Keenan and Maj. Larry Boyd reported that the pilot ejected from the single-seat aircraft and was transported to a local medical facility. The pilot sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the emergency. Emergency crews responded to the site, dousing the wreckage with firefighting foam and water to extinguish a small fire that erupted during the crash. The F-35B is considered one of the most advanced stealth aircraft in the world, capable of vertical takeoff and landing. The military is currently investigating the cause of the accident.
