The aircraft is the smallest model in the company's bestselling 737 family, which has faced significant safety and production challenges in recent years. The administration announced that the approval follows years of rigorous testing and design changes, including updated flight-control software and a redesigned engine anti-ice system to prevent overheating. The certification was delayed due to heightened regulatory scrutiny following two fatal crashes of the larger Max 8 model. Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, stated that the certification validates the rigor of the airplane's design. Southwest Airlines, a major carrier with outstanding orders, expects to use the Max 7 for short- and medium-haul routes. The approval is expected to help Boeing recover from recent crises by allowing the manufacturer to deliver more aircraft to customers.
