Capt. Spencer Long and his family were killed by a flash flood in southern Utah during a hiking trip.

Capt. Spencer Long, a veteran member of Provo Fire and Rescue, was killed in a flash flood along with his wife, Katrina, and their three sons, Reid, Thayne, and Gage. The family was hiking and canyoneering at the Sunglow Campground in the Fishlake National Forest near Bicknell, Utah, on Friday. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office reported that the family was swept away by heavy rains that transformed the area's canyons into flood washes. While the family's daughter survived the incident, she was left to navigate the loss of her parents and three brothers. Local communities and neighboring fire departments have offered condolences to the family. Katrina was well-known as a community leader and the co-founder of Summit Medical Spa. Residents noted that while the region is accustomed to monsoon season, the suddenness of the flood was particularly devastating for the young family.
