Hong Wang and Yu Deng become the first Chinese mathematicians to receive the prestigious Fields Medal
Hong Wang and Yu Deng have been awarded the Fields Medal, the highest honor in mathematics, for solving complex problems that have challenged researchers for over a century. Hong Wang, a 35-year-old professor at New York University, received the award for her work on the 3D Kakeya set conjecture, which explores how line segments pointing in every direction occupy space. She is only the third woman to receive the medal in the award's 90-year history. Yu Deng, a 37-year-old professor at the University of Chicago, was honored for his work on partial differential equations and solving Hilbert's Sixth Problem by analyzing the behavior of gases. Both academics are alumni of Peking University and have achieved significant international recognition. The awards were presented alongside John Pardon and Jacob Tsimerman. The achievement has sparked significant interest in China, where the two mathematicians are being celebrated as symbols of academic excellence.
