Elizabeth Warren questions Trump-tied companies over tax settlement immunity
Sen. Elizabeth Warren has launched an investigation into whether a tax settlement between President Trump and his administration applies to various companies affiliated with the Trump family. The settlement, finalized in May, permanently bars the Internal Revenue Service from pursuing tax claims against President Trump, his sons, and the Trump Organization based on prior returns. While the administration announced the deal to resolve a lawsuit regarding leaked tax returns, several Trump-tied businesses, including Trump Media and Technology Group, have distanced themselves from the agreement. In a letters to the Democratic senators, representatives from these companies stated they are not parties to the settlement and may not be covered by the immunity. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and other Democrats have expressed concerns that the deal provides a "get-out-of-jail-free card" for the Trump family. Meanwhile, the Senate Finance Committee is considering a bipartisan tax administration package that includes a proposed amendment to ban such sweetheart audit immunity deals for future presidents. The administration announced the settlement includes a $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund, which has become a point of contention for some Republican senators during the confirmation of acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
