A subway fire at the Astor Place station injured 14 people and caused delays on the 4, 5, and 6 lines.

A fire broke out on a four-car vacuum train at the Astor Place station in the East Village early Tuesday morning. The blaze, which began around 2:15 a.m., sent heavy smoke through the station and up to the street level. FDNY Assistant Chief Tom Currao reported that the fire originated in a filter bay of the train used to clear debris from the tracks. Fourteen people were injured in the incident, including eight MTA workers and six firefighters. Most of the injured suffered from smoke inhalation and were taken to local hospitals for treatment. While the fire was brought under control by 5:30 a.m., subway service on the 4, 5, and 6 lines was restored by 7:00 a.m. with some residual delays. Authorities are currently monitoring for contaminants and working to move the electrical unit back into position for the morning commute.
