San Francisco Police Department locates sunken memorial boat Volare 130 feet below the surface near Alcatraz Island

The San Francisco Police Department announced it has tracked down the sunken 49-foot cabin cruiser, Volare, resting between 120 and 130 feet beneath San Francisco Bay. The vessel vanished on Tuesday while carrying 20 friends and relatives who gathered to scatter the ashes of Maria Vi Boisa, a woman who died in 2016. Investigators believe the boat was struck by a massive wave, causing it to list and roll over. While the San Francisco Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard rescued 16 people, three passengers were confirmed dead. Clifford Joseph Boisa, the 79-year-old brother of the boat's captain, died of cardiac arrest after being rescued, and Tondra Miller was found floating near Treasure Island on Thursday. Two family members, Jackie Boisa and Carol Boisa, remain missing and are presumed dead. The administration of the search effort now focuses on recovery. Because the wreck lies in deep, fast-moving water, crews are using remotely operated underwater vehicles and sonar to determine if the vessel can be safely raised to the surface.
