Miiyah Paavola and her community fled for safety as intense wildfires devastated the Collins First Nation in northwestern Ontario.

Miiyah Paavola and her community were forced to flee for their lives as a wildfire struck the remote Collins First Nation in northwestern Ontario. Residents of the Indigenous community, which lacks road access, escaped by boat as flames reached the shoreline, leaving many to leave behind their pets and belongings. Chief Helen Paavola, the community's leader, expressed relief that all members were evacuated safely, though her home was completely destroyed. The destruction of Collins has highlighted issues regarding wildfire preparedness. Linda Debassige, Grand Council Chief of the Anishinabek Nation, noted that the community fell through jurisdictional cracks as a "near band," complicating its access to government support. Meanwhile, the broader region faces a wildfire emergency with 191 active fires in Ontario. Premier Doug Ford stated that the administration is deploying over 150 fire crews and 80 aircraft to manage the blazes. The smoke has also impacted air quality hundreds of miles away, prompting Donald Trump to comment on the widespread pollution affecting North America.
