Nirmal Purja Confirmed Dead After Avalanche Strikes Broad Peak Expedition
Nirmal Purja, a renowned British-Nepali climber, was confirmed dead after a massive avalanche struck a 10-member international expedition on Pakistan's Broad Peak. Purja, who was famous for climbing all 14 of the world's highest peaks in just over six months, was a leading figure in the team. The administration announced that the remains of Purja, along with climbers Wang Zhong, Nima Sherpa, and Killi Pemba “Kilu” Sherpa, were successfully brought to Base Camp. While four bodies were recovered, three others—Sohail Sakhi, Mallory Weis, and Nawang Sherpa—remain on the mountain due to challenging conditions. The recovery operation, led by Mingma G, involved a technically demanding effort to navigate avalanche-prone areas. The tragedy highlights the significant role of Nepali Sherpas in global mountaineering, a role Purja actively worked to promote. Despite the inherent risks of high-altitude climbing, the recovery teams from Pakistan and Nepal continue to work to coordinate with international embassies to return the victims home.
